New Players in Focus: Kieran Dowell

New loanee at Forest.

Kieran Dowell being unveiled at the City Ground
Kieran is a 19 year old English midfielder, who has signed from Everton for the season. Hailing from Ormskirk, he has spent his entire career (although brief) at Everton.  He has only made two appearances for Everton thus far, with none last year. Kieran was the next youngster expected to break through into the first team. They have a procession line of players making the grade at first team level, and Kieran is no doubt expected to be a big part of the future. And now he has made a move to Forest.

He has represented England at England at all levels up to U-20 level. He was part of the squad that won the U-20 World Cup earlier this summer

What do Everton fans think of the deal.

Pleasingly a lot a lot are quite upset. They think they should be seeing him this season.
Taking some views from the Liverpool Echo article on him joining us.

“A crazy decision to loan him out. I fully expected Dowell to kick on this season and break into the first team as Davies did last season. Everton need strength and depth with European football on the agenda this season, so why dilute that depth?”

And

“I can't believe that we have a hungry,  talented, strong,  able left sided player who scored in two of the three pre-season games- let go to pick up injuries in the Championship...i hope this move isn’t 100% yet - someone needs to wake up and keep him”

From the Everton forum ““It’s a Grand Old Team...”

On the subject of Dowell, this is a good move for him. Success with Everton's youth team, check. Success with an England age-group, check. Success playing competitive football against solid opposition, soon to be checked (hopefully). Very clear strategy in place, if he's good enough you'll see him back in blue in no time, if he ain't then we move on to the next one.

And

“He needs game time. I was hopeful that Koeman would give him it but clearly he doesn't think he's ready quite yet. And tbh, it's hard to disagree if we're looking for a player that will consistently put in the work for 90 mins week-in-week out. He needs experience of a team where he has to be involved all the time. He can't go missing in games and then come up with a worldy like in the U23s and expect that to be enough.”

There was a huge bizarre rant where some of their fans got very upset saying that Championship is all cloggers and that he WILL get injured and will ruin his career as all the Championship is people kicking one another,

On the other hand is

“Whenever I've seen him he's always given me the impression that he has that much needed touch of class.
Personally I think he'd be better with the first team squad.  Koeman sees more of him and knows more about footy than I'll ever know but for me he has the potential to be top drawer and I think he needs to be around premiership standard players.”

The Managers View

Warburton has sung his praises. Not that a manager would not do so for a new signing.

“He is a young, talented player and we are very much looking forward to seeing him develop and contribute. He has technical excellence, he is comfortable on the ball and can play in a variety of positions. He has flexibility and a hunger and a passion when he plays.

The flexibility is something that Warburton has spoken of about numerous signings. It something he is very keen on. The same comfort on the ball is something he mentioned with McKay so he is very keen on players with excellent technical skills.

“We want those types of players, allied to the experienced and senior players we have in the squad as well. He has a good grounding and a good CV. He has a good physical size and good mobility. He has a great delivery and a lovely left foot. He has come in, he is a talented player, he is fit, he is well – he is available for selection.”
It does add a great variety with young hungry players allayed with experienced pros like Vaughan, Murphy and Cohen.

 Value for Money

Well it’s a loan, so that can’t fail on that front. Whatever we are paying might not be very much, as Everton will be keener for their man to get vital experience. We have thought this with young loanees before however (Michael Stewart anyone) but this feels different. The fact fans from Everton feel he should be first team speaks volumes.
Some moan that loans block our own players’ development. But when a quality player becomes available in this manner then you move for them. So absolutely a bargain.

In Summary

This feels like we can’t lose. A quality player for relatively low fees, it just makes sense. Dowell has a lot of promise and maybe should be eased into the team with a few sub appearances before being started. I’m not saying protect him, but let him see Championship football first hand before getting his bow. We have players who can play that role, but with Ward being out he adds vital strength in that role.

It will also give us some attention with Everton fans and have attention of one of the U-20 heroes getting some first team football.  It feels like there won’t be much attention on him either so he should be pressure free.
