World Cup Connections - 2006

We're jumping forward a long way from 1982 to just 8 years ago to the 2006 World Cup - in Germany

Considering at the time were a League One side you'd expect less connections but we still manage to have links to 4 players at that World Cup.

None of whom were playing for us at the time of course.
Terry

England
Two players in the 06 squad for England had pasts playing for Forest. Both in the early stages of their careers but that’s where similarities end.
Jermaine Jenas, a Nottingham lad who came through the academy and was sold to basically keep the club alive to Newcastle was a member of the squad for 2006. The midfielder of course came back to the club a couple of seasons ago on loan. Jenas will always be regarded fondly by Forest fans, and it was nice to have a youth product going to the World Cup in Germany.
John Terry was a leading member of that squad, and as most Forest fans know he spent a short while under David Platt on loan at Forest. Maybe it was his loan spell here that played a huge part of developing him, or maybe in fact not.

Trinidad and Tobago
In their one and only ever World Cup appearance, Trinidad included who was an ex Forest player in their squad in Stern John. Stern had a mixed time in his career with Forest which started slowly and as it got going was revealed there were payments we couldn't afford and had to offload him just as he'd started justifying the £1.5mill we'd spend on him. John, and Trinidad as a whole as a nation would fail to score a single goal at the world Cup, but they didn't shame themselves either.

John

USA
Ben Olsen, another foreign import under Platt, but on loan featured in the American squad. Had it not been for a series of troubling ankle injuries, Olsen would probably have become a Forest player full time, and I remember him looking a quality addition for the Reds at an away game v Stockport. Olsen made on appearance for the States during the competition, coming on for Claudio Reyna. The injuries mentioned above kept him out of their 2002 squad which he'd surely have starred in. He has since moved into coaching.
