Following
from last weeks article looking at 1990 world cup and he plethora of Forest
links at that World Cup, we come forward in time to 1998.
Scotland
Netherlands
Jamaica
1998 was not
as strongly represented for Forest as 1990. There are 6 connections at this
World Cup, as opposed to the 15 we featured at 1990.
There were
only two of our then current members of staff present, who we will come to in
due course. But as before, lets break it down by nations, starting with the
Home ones.
England
in 1998, there was one player in the England squad who has had a Forest link in his career. Teddy Sheringham. Sheringham had signed for Manchester United the summer before, and was at 31 already seeming over the hill (which compared with the fact how much longer his career lasted is laughable. Sheringham had played for Forest in the early 90's, leaving in the very first Premier League season. He left us for Spurs, and then United where his greatest glory came a year later in the Champions League final. His greatest moments for England arguably came who years previous at Euro 96 as he partnered Shearer up front as England made the semi finals.

Scotland
Scot Gemmill , like his father before him travelled with a Scotland squad to
the World Cup, however unlike his dad, who scored an iconic goal, Scot never
got off the bench, being only a fringe squad member. Gemmill played as a first
team member for many years, from scoring the winner at Wembley in the 1992
Zenith Data Systems Cup, till he left for Everton in the 1999 relegation season
as we sought to get any fee we could for him. Also in the Scotland squad was a
certain Colin Calderwood who obviously later become our manager and ultimately
get us promoted from league One before later getting the boot, to be replaced
by Billy Davies.

We have 2 connections to this squad. The most obvious being Pierre van
Hooijdonk, who would after the World Cup go on strike and become much maligned
by Forest fans. Pierre scored for Holland at the World Cup against South Korea.
Van Hooijdonk was a prolific striker in his career, and his ability at set
pieces was second to none. Also in that squad was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who
would of course end up as on our coaching staff, being bought in by Steve
McClaren, and staying the rest of the season. Hasselbaink was also a striker,
and had a successful career in England with Chelsea, Leeds and Middlesbrough.
Most obscurely of all is the Jamaican connection. Darryl Powell, then of Derby
was in that squad, and he would subsequently join us in Gary Megsons spell as a
midfielder as we were relegated from the Championship. He played 11 times for the Reds, but wasn't particularly effective. Powell played twice in the World Cup, being sent off against Argentina in Jamaica's second game
